Striking Out Hunger 2013

Throw Hunger a Curve Ball!

The PawSox pitchers have been warming up for a big season this year, and every Rhode Islander should be cheering them on. Thanks to a unique partnership between the Citizens Bank Foundation, the PawSox and Cox Communications, every PawSox strike-out will put $75 toward food for hungry families, up to a total contribution of $75,000.

The annual campaign, known as Striking Out Hunger, has produced $425,000 in funds for the Food Bank since it began six years ago. If the PawSox pitchers throw 1,000 strike-outs or more this season, Striking Out Hunger will have reached the half-million dollar mark for donations over the life of the campaign.

"It's a great partnership," says Andrew Schiff, Chief Executive Officer of the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. "The Citizens Bank Foundation provides the donations, Cox Communications provides the public service campaign, and the PawSox provide exciting baseball for all of us to enjoy. Together, we make a real difference in the lives of kids and families who rely on our food pantries around the state."

The Food Bank's network of food pantries currently serves more than 66,000 Rhode Islanders every month. One in three served is a child under the age of 18. Rhode Island currently has the highest level of food insecurity -- or hunger -- in New England.

Currently, more than 51,000 children in Rhode Island receive free or reduced-priced lunch in school. When school lets out, these children are particularly vulnerable to hunger. Last year, the Food Bank's Summer Food Service Program served 5,940 children at 198 summer meal sites in Rhode Island in an effort to make sure these children did not go hungry during their summer break.

4th Annual Motorcycle/Car Show & Food Drive

Saturday, April 27 at McCoy Stadium

Before cheering on the PawSox, fans brought non-perishable food to this Motorcycle/Car Show & Food Drive, which featured amazing motorcycles and cars, live music, vendors, food, trophies and dash plaques. Attendees also mingled with Paws and Sox.

This annual event is part of the Striking Out Hunger campaign, a partnership of the PawSox, the Citizens Bank Foundation and Cox Communications.
