East Bay: More RI'ers Going Without Food

EAST BAY — The economic recession has led to a sharp rise in food insecurity and hunger in the Ocean State, according to stark statistics released Monday by the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

“The demand at food pantry sites all across the state has grown by 58 percent since the beginning of the recession four years ago,” said Andrew Schiff, chief executive officer of the Food Bank, during a news conference Monday morning. These programs serve 60,000 people in Rhode Island each month.
